YOUR GIVING IS HELPING 5.8 MILLION FAMILIES IN ASIA!

To December 2018, your support is empowering 5.82 million families across Asia by kick-starting a sustainable path out of poverty for them.

Small loans are just the start of the transformation. With money to buy seeds to grow a vegetable patch or a sewing machine to start a tailoring shop, each loan empowers an entrepreneur to increase their income and support their family with shelter, health and education. Over 95% of these entrepreneurs are women – meaning you're directly assisting those who would otherwise struggle to access affordable financial services.

With small loans to grow small businesses, alongside other community development services, your giving is transforming lives for generations to come.

Your giving is helping 4.6 million families in India

Opportunity's partners in India continue to bring financial inclusion to more families in more locations across India. Our 13 microfinance partners are now reaching 4,606,869 families.

With an average of five in each family, your giving is helping over 23 million people to break the cycle of poverty.

In the past six months your support has given 341,583 more entrepreneurs the opportunity to turn their business ideas into reality. As their businesses grow, parents are supporting their children with better food, shelter and education.

STRIVING FOR SMARTER SOLUTIONS

Opportunity continues to work with our program partners across India to better leverage technology to enhance the products and services they offer to families in need. Our newest partners, Satya and Pahal are two leaders in this field with innovative models moving towards increasingly cashless transactions. Harnessing technology can also help our microfinance partners deliver innovative loan products tailored to the needs of the families they serve. For example, Satya offers a festival holiday period – postponing repayments during four major Indian festivals, while Pahal offers "hospi-cash" so clients can access funds for basic health expenses when they are unable to work to earn any income.

LEARNING FROM SOCIAL PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT

Opportunity's Social Performance Management (SPM) ensures that we understand clients' needs and equips us to design products and services that will enable families to most effectively transform their futures and their communities.

Are we reaching those in need?

The graph below helps us understand one aspect of who we are reaching – rural clients.

OPPORTUNITY'S PARTNERS IN INDONESIA

Our partners in Indonesia are continuing to grow. Operational sustainability and portfolio at risk are at appropriate levels.

REACHING OVER 1 MILLION FAMILIES

In December 2018, Opportunity's microfinance partners in Indonesia reached over 1 million active clients for the first time. This milestone is a result of our expansion strategy to reach more underserved families in more regions across Indonesia, where the need for financial inclusion is significant.

Your support has enabled our outreach to grow both through new partnerships, but also through building the capacity of our existing partners. For example, our long-term partner TLM has more than doubled their active clients from 30,018 in December 2012 to 77,136 in December 2018. There are many factors that have enabled this growth in outreach but of particular note are smarter, more efficient branch processes leading to a dramatic reduction in Portfolio at Risk. Today TLM's current PAR is almost negligible - just 0.2% compared to 12.2% in December 2012.

OPPORTUNITY'S PARTNERS IN THE PHILIPPINES

ENSURING OUR PARTNERS BEST SERVE FAMILIES IN POVERTY

In late 2018, Opportunity's regular monitoring through our Social Performance Management uncovered that changes to our program partner ASKI's loan-pricing had made loan products complex and increased the pricing substantially.

For the clients with the smallest loans, arguably those most in need, the effective interest being charged became so high that after months of unsuccessfully trying to work with management to remove those fees, Opportunity informed the board of our partner ASKI that we would be suspending our partnership for a period of 12 months. We hope this action will motivate ASKI to revise its fee structure to accommodate more acceptable effective interest rates so we can resume our partnership.

ASKI's operating model has relied on generating funding through microfinance activities for high-cost community development initiatives. Whilst some of their microfinance clients benefitted from these initiatives, we do not believe it appropriate for all microfinance clients pay for these costs. This approach is not aligned to Opportunity's mission to end poverty through smart, scalable and sustainable solutions.

Also in late 2018, our partnership agreement with program partner TSKI expired. In recent years we have attempted to work with TSKI to improve their loan pricing, however TSKI has not made changes to ensure their products are designed to provide opportunities to families living in poverty and as a result Opportunity has allowed this partnership to end.

If you are interested in learning more about how we came to these decisions please get in touch with your State Manager.

FINANCIAL INCLUSION FOR MORE FAMILIES

Opportunity continues to seek potential microfinance partners to help us deliver and grow microfinance programs in the Philippines.

Our long-term strategy in the Philippines continues to focus on harnessing technology to better meet client needs and grow financial inclusion. Opportunity's partner OK Remit is working to make it easier and more affordable for families to access loans and other financial services that strengthen their resilience and help them to thrive. See the Digital Inclusion in Asia report to learn more.
