How A Small Loan Changed Seema's Life
Seema lives in a slum just outside Delhi in India. Every day she struggled to feed her five children. But in spite of her hardship, Seema faced every day with a smile so wide it made everyone who saw it smile too.
What makes her smile now is that someone just like you gave her an unimaginable gift. A loan of just $200 – a passport out of poverty.
With her loan, Seema started a shop, selling snacks to workers nearby. With what to you or I might seem like a tiny amount of money to start a successful business, Seema is now able to earn enough to feed her children – 3 times a day, 7 days a week.
Before, she and her family often only ate just one small meal of rice and lentils a day. In fact, on her very first day running her shop, Seema earned $3.60 – twice the $1.80 a day her family previously lived on. She is now able to send her children to school – every day.
She has plans for a door on her hut to shut out the bitter winter winds, and a proper floor instead of the dirt that’s there now, so her family can be warm when the temperatures drop close to freezing.
One day, she hopes, she might actually have running water.
But most of all, Seema’s dream is for her children to finish school and get good jobs, so that their children don’t have to grow up in a slum too.
All of that is now possible for Seema, thanks to someone just like you.
Today, you can make a decision to help another mother like Seema. With a hand up in the form of a small loan, you can help another family start a small shop, or invest in a boat to fish from, or buy ingredients to cook and sell, or even plant seeds for a crop.
When you do, you’ll be helping a mother send her children to school so that they can get good jobs and in turn educate their own children, so that the cycle of poverty is broken, once and for all.
