Cooking up an exotic curry to help families break the cycle of poverty

By Annie Crawford

“Indian food is incredibly exotic,” says Annie Crawford, an Opportunity International Australia Council Member and Can Too charity founder. With butter chicken curry being a favourite, Annie believes Opportunity’s Great Australian Curry fundraising campaign will raise awareness about poverty in India and the way Australian families can help families on their doorstep.

Annie says: “Hosting a Great Australian Curry dinner is very simple and a great way to build awareness of Opportunity. Having a curry night is a lovely way to entertain friends and raise funds to help families in poverty. Opportunity provides lots of tips for hosting a curry night on its Great Australian Curry website as well as recipes, flyers, place cards, posters and donation forms.”

Last year, Annie cooked up a Great Australian Curry feast for twenty of her friends. Annie’s husband happily went shopping for a selection of aromatic spices and chutneys at the local spice shop as well as dumplings, lychees and ice cream for dessert and her sister helped her to prepare samosas and three simple curries – a Thai chicken curry, lamb and chickpea curry and Balinese chicken curry. Annie and her husband generously matched the donations of their guests, many of whom were friends of her sister and hadn’t previously known of Opportunity.

Annie says she is proud to support Opportunity because of its transparency, professionalism and leadership in alleviating poverty. “I believe woman in developing countries who receive microfinance loans from Opportunity gain great dignity as they can use the profits from their little businesses to feed and educate their families as well as make significant positive changes in their communities.”

‘I also respect the way Opportunity partners with local organisations on the ground in developing countries. This ensures services such as financial tools, education and health programs are delivered in a culturally aware and sensitive manner that allows for communities to take charge of making the necessary changes to improve their own lives.”

“I hope Australians get on board with the Great Australian Curry to raise funds to help families in developing countries break the cycle of poverty themselves,” she added.
