World Food Day: Invest in food security and rural development

By Roydon Ng

The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has been running World Food Day each year on 16 October since 1981. Building on the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2 of “Zero Hunger” and last year’s theme of a changing climate on food and agriculture, the issues of food security and rural development are important. As the SDG states, its aim is: “to end all forms of hunger and malnutrition by 2030, making sure all people – especially children – have access to sufficient and nutritious food all year round.”

World Food Day highlights that while the right to food is a basic human right and the likelihood of a child under five years of age dying from hunger has fallen over the past 20 years, the challenge to achieve #ZeroHunger by 2030 remains at large. The need to invest in food security cannot be underestimated, along with sustainable agricultural practices and equality of access to land, technology and markets. Rising to these challenges will enable a more resilient, productive and sustainable global food supply.

With the FAO working towards better understanding migration and upskilling countries to be responsive to population movements, the consequence of inaction will be an unsustainable demand for food. Meeting the challenge of food security and rural development is a goal shared by Opportunity International Australia.  As well as providing small loans to build businesses, Opportunity uses technology to connect rural communities to make it easier and cheaper for families living in remote rural areas to do financial transactions – to access their loans and make repayments. Families also use technology to access information critical to their businesses like crop prices and weather reports.

The opportunity to make a difference in the lives of families in poverty is now. Especially on World Food Day, let’s help make sure families in developing countries can feed their children before we buy our next cappuccino. Why not take part in supporting Opportunity in its efforts to meet the challenges of food security and rural development to #ZeroHunger by 2030. Your generous gift of $70 will be invested in mothers through life-changing loans that will help them build their own small businesses so they can earn the income they need to feed their children. Or even better, take part in the Great Australian Curry to share the work of Opportunity with your friends and family!
