YOUR GIVING IS HELPING 5.8 MILLION FAMILIES IN ASIA!

To June 2018, your support is empowering 5.8 million families across Asia by kick-starting a sustainable path out of poverty for them.

Small loans are just the start of the transformation. With money to buy seeds to grow a vegetable patch or a sewing machine to start a tailoring shop, each loan empowers a female entrepreneur to increase her income and support her family with shelter, health and education.

With small loans to grow small businesses, alongside other community development services, your giving is transforming lives for generations to come.

Your giving is helping 4.3 million families in India

Opportunity's partners in India continue to bring financial inclusion to more families in more locations across India. Our 13 microfinance partners – including the newest, Pahal – are now reaching 4,265,286 families.

With an average of five in each family, your giving is helping over 21.3 million people to break the cycle of poverty.

In the past six months your support has given 633,396 more entrepreneurs the opportunity to turn their business ideas into reality. As their businesses grow, parents are supporting their children with better food, shelter and education.

SUPPORTING FAMILIES TO RECOVER FROM DISASTER

In August 2018 the south Indian state of Kerala endured the worst flooding in nearly a century. Opportunity's largest program partner in India, ESAF, is headquartered in Kerala – some 70% of the 1.85M families it serves live here. Opportunity is working closely with ESAF to support families as they recover from the impact of flooding, and also to maintain their sustainable, well-managed portfolio.

INTRODUCING OPPORTUNITY'S NEWEST PARTNER: PAHAL

Since 2011 microfinance institution Pahal has grown to serve almost 140,000 families with small loans in four states of India's north west – Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. Pahal has set a solid foundation of best-practice in socially-focussed microfinance, and is now embarking on a phase of growth with plans to reach more families in underserved regions. Pahal's commitment to the best outcomes for families living in poverty can be seen in their eagerness to become SMART certified.

OPPORTUNITY'S PARTNERS IN INDONESIA

Our partners in Indonesia are continuing to grow. Operational sustainability and portfolio at risk are at appropriate levels.

REBUILDING HOMES AND BUSINESSES

In the wake of recent natural disasters in Indonesia, many of the families Opportunity serves are dealing with the loss of homes, businesses and – most tragically of all – loved ones.

In August 2018, the island of Lombok – where program partner Komida serves around 10,000 clients –suffered a series of powerful earthquakes leading to widespread destruction of property and infrastructure. In late-September, the island of Sulawesi was hit by a powerful earthquake and subsequent tsunami. Opportunity has two program partners reaching families in the area impacted – partner TLM serve around 4,000 families, with BAV serving a few hundred through two recently opened branches.

As the recovery efforts continue following these shocks, Opportunity is working closely with our program partners to support families to re-establish livelihoods and recover.

GROWING PARTNERS FROM A SUCCESSFUL STRATEGY

Thanks to your support, Opportunity has been expanding our partnerships in Indonesia to reach more underserved families in more regions – over the past six years the families we're reaching in Indonesia has grown from around 30,000 to almost 900,000.

A recent independent evaluation of these expansion activities shows Opportunity’s engagement with microfinance partners is proving highly effective. Carried out by microfinance technical expert, Micra, the evaluation found Opportunity’s approach has built a sustainable program, delivering highly-valued assistance to our program partners.

OPPORTUNITY'S PARTNERS IN THE PHILIPPINES

Filipino partners continue to focus on depth of impact rather than growth in outreach.

The Philippines is prone to frequent natural disasters, forcing families to face rebuilding their lives and their livelihoods too often. In September, Super Typhoon Mangkhut – the strongest in five years – struck the northern island of Luzon, where our program partner ASKI is reaching over 93,000 families with small loans. We're working to support these families as the impact of the typhoon to their homes and livelihoods becomes clear.

One area in which partners are building their depth of impact is harnessing technology to better meet client needs and grow financial inclusion. Opportunity's partner OK Remit is making it easier and more affordable for families to access loans and other financial services that strengthen their resilience and help them to thrive. See the Digital Inclusion in Asia report to learn more.
