Creating Pathways out of Poverty

Your support is helping millions of families and their communities rebuild and grow across Asia. Opportunity International Australia partners with microfinance institutions, community leaders, health and safety service providers, schools and teachers to help families live safe, empowered lives.

60 Decibels: Driving Impact

Rani and her child

A new study suggests that small loans for women and families experiencing poverty are an effective tool for:

  • increasing quality of life
  • improving income and household outcomes
  • and reaching families without other alternatives for capital.

The 2023 MFI Index, conducted by 60 Decibels, found that 94 per cent of Opportunity International Australia’s microfinance clients in Asia reported improved quality of life, thanks to the small loans. A total of 1,947 small loan clients from seven of Opportunity’s microfinance partners were surveyed in India and Indonesia, between November 2022 to June 2023.

Zarina waste management

5,056,908 families in India and 1,447,696 families in Indonesia are benefiting from small loans and financial services, with more than 95 per cent of our loan clients being women.

Women like Zarina, who took out a small loan to grow her waste recycling business, which now provides her with a steady income while reducing the amount of waste going to landfill or being dumped in her community.

Opportunity continues to work with our local partners to identify the areas where the need is greatest, bringing opportunities to the families and communities that need them most across India and Indonesia.

Your Impact: Health

Health Leaders

Through our locally-led health programs in India, Bangladesh and Indonesia, 1 million families were supported by Health Leaders and Health Entrepreneurs in Asia. In 2022, 1,200 new Health Leaders and Health Entrepreneurs were trained to deliver essential health education, products and services.

After facilitating training on COVID-19 education modules in Nepal in 2021, and meeting with seven microfinance organisations in 2022, we are working towards launching the Health Leaders program in our fourth country of operation. An expansion into Nepal will help us reach even more families with essential health education and opportunities to become community leaders.

Your Impact: Education

Meena and her daughter

Opportunity EduFinance provided school fee loans to 43,500 families in India, Indonesia and Pakistan to ensure their children go to school and receive a quality education. School improvement loans have been provided to 9,200 schools to improve school facilities and education quality in these regions.

The goal of Opportunity EduFinance is to help accelerate an end to the global education crisis. Your support helps more kids go to school and stay in school, while improving the quality of education schools provide. We'll continue to work with finance partners across Asia to expand, including offering education loans like school fee loans and school improvement loans, and improving the quality of the education children receive.

Your Impact: Women's Safety

Women walking down the street in India

In India, 70,000 people were educated in trafficking prevention and 12,500 people were educated and supported to prevent gender-based violence.

While financial empowerment and safer families and communities go hand-in-hand, there is a strong need to integrate livelihoods-based approaches that improve women’s economic standing, with rights-based education for women and girls, as well as their families and communities.

We continue to take an evidence-based approach to preventing gender-based violence and trafficking. Partner and third-party evaluations undertaken in 2022 will inform our approach in 2023 and beyond as we scale this work.

Sold out cakes provide a stable income

The number of families we've reached with small loans in Indonesia grew in 2022, reaching over 1.4 million families. 95% of these loan clients are women.

Women like Elisabet, who used a small income to start her small business. Not earning enough from the boom-and-bust cycle of rice farming, with many months where there's no harvest at all, Elisabeth used a small loan to create a stable income selling delicious cakes and pastries door-to-door in her neighbourhood. With the income earned, she hopes to give her two children an education and pave a pathway towards a brighter future.
