Aussie Test Cricketer determined to retain his crown in Great Australian Curry Cook-off!

By Michael Kasprowicz

Former Australian Test Cricketer and Opportunity International Australia Council member, Michael Kasprowicz, has travelled extensively in India for sport and business during the last 19 years. He loves the country and its people and is committed to helping families in India break the cycle of poverty themselves by receiving small loans from Opportunity to build businesses and earn regular incomes.

Michael reflects on the circumstances facing many children in India who live in poverty. “Children in India often go hungry and may not go to school because their parents can’t afford the fees. As a parent wanting the best for my children, I’m particularly committed to sharing opportunities with parents in India. Like me, they want their children to have a secure future and they are willing to work hard to achieve this.”

“I’d love Aussie cricket fans to cook up a curry this October or November, share it with friends and raise funds to help families in India receive small loans from Opportunity. I’ve seen myself how families in India use the income from their tiny businesses for the basic necessities of life – clean water, nutritious food, safe shelter and education for their children.”

Last year, Michael won the Great Australian Curry cook-off title in a closely fought battle with Stephanie Rice. “I’m determined to keep my title this year despite the intense competition. I’ll be competing against the MKR duo Valerie and Courtney Ferdinands at INDRIYA, so I’m honing my curry-making skills at home to make sure I win again. The heat is on!”

After his many visits to India, Michael has developed a taste for Southern Indian-style prawn curries and any vegetarian dish containing eggplant. He’s thinking he may make this his signature dish for the curry cook-off. Speaking of his excitement about the event, Michael says: “The curry cook-off will increase awareness amongst Aussies of India’s poverty and the way Opportunity is working with families in India to free themselves from poverty, with hope, dignity and purpose.

“I hope cricket lovers in Brisbane will join me on 14 September at INDRYIA for a spicy Indian feast and a lot of fun.”
