2022 Queen’s Birthday Honours for Opportunity community

By Opportunity International Australia

Opportunity International Australia congratulates three recipients of the recent Queen’s Birthday Honours.

John Anderson, former Deputy Prime Minister of Australia and current Opportunity Council Member, was awarded the Companion in the Order of Australia (AC). He received the honour for his eminent service to rural and regional development, to leadership in international agricultural research and food security, to social commentary, and through contributions to not-for-profit organisations. John has been a Council Member with Opportunity since 2011.

Former Chair of the Board at Opportunity, Terry Winters, received the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his significant service to the community through charitable organisations.

Terry, who resides in Melbourne, served on the Board of Directors at Opportunity International Australia from 1994-2006 and was Chair from 2002-2006. During this time he also served as Director of Opportunity USA and following this as Chair the Global Board of Opportunity International until 2010. Terry has invested a great deal of time working with Opportunity Partners primarily in Africa and Asia and continues to serve on the Board of TSPI in the Philippines.  Terry was a Council Member in Australia from 2011 until recently stepping down. He has been a wonderful supporter over several decades.

From the first time I was introduced to Opportunity and saw what real poverty looked like and how the power of small amounts of money and mentoring could transform the lives of poor families, I knew I had found a purpose worth giving away executive life to support” - Terry Winters

Current Opportunity Council Member Dr Timothy Wright also received an AM for his significant service to primary and secondary education, and to professional associations. The former Principal at SHORE, and other independent schools, Timothy joined the Opportunity Council in 2019 as he retired from teaching. He has been a leader in boys’ education for many decades.
