Opportunity International Australia has partnered with Inspired Adventures, Australia’s leading adventure fundraising agency, to take supporters on a trip of a lifetime, trekking at the foot of the Himalayas in northern India, all whilst raising critical funds for women and families experiencing poverty.

The trip, from 25 October – 3 November 2023, involves travelling from Kolkata to Varanasi, taking in the breathtaking views of the Eastern Himalayas along the way. At the end of the trek, participants will meet with some inspiring female entrepreneurs using small loans to start or grow their business, and learn more about Opportunity’s locally-led, poverty alleviation programs first-hand.

With international borders closed throughout the pandemic, Opportunity has been unable to run insight trips with supporters and corporations to experience the local programs we support to alleviate poverty. Now with Trek for Opportunity, members of the Opportunity community can travel to India to see it first-hand in a ten-day experience that blends fundraising, advocacy and impact.

The Trek for Opportunity will travel through scenic villages, monasteries, and tea plantations, and participants will experience the Eastern Himalayan Range, as well as some of India’s most vibrant metropolises. From views of majestic, snow-capped peaks to dense forests, and lush valleys, this trek will also be a challenge for those looking to push their limits and fundraise for those in needs.

All participants on the trek will fundraise for Opportunity, with the objective to live in a world free from poverty.

Sumit Sopori from Perth was one of the first participants to sign up for the trek.

“Opportunity International has always been a cause close to my heart, with ending poverty in developing countries,” said Sumit.

“Being close to nature is my passion and hobby. Therefore when this opportunity came up, there was no reason to think twice. Trekking the Himalayas to fund Opportunity’s microfinance program is a significant contribution that we can give back to our communities.”

The trek in India has spaces for 20 participants to join this trip of a lifetime, and spaces are filling fast.
