Ambassador Nomusa preparing for the trip of a lifetime
Opportunity International Australia Ambassador Nomusa Ngwenya is one of the adventurers who will be trekking the Eastern Himalayas in India in October to raise money for Opportunity.
Nomusa has been passionate about the work of Opportunity for a long time and is excited to visit the microfinance clients she helps support in Varanasi at the end of the trek.
“I was interested in the physical challenge of the trek and also the opportunity to meet some of the loan recipients and see firsthand the impact of the money raised by Opportunity in helping transform the lives of the individual recipients, their families and communities,” said Nomusa.
Nomusa has been an Opportunity Ambassador for five years and believes in the cause to end poverty.
“I have been able to present the mission of Opportunity in the workplace, to friends and family and whenever I have a chance to raise it,” said Nomusa. “I am a proud ambassador for the cause and hope to encourage as many people as possible to join us as we work to end poverty.
“I love that with the microfinance model and the high loan repayment rate that each dollar donated to Opportunity is circulated through the recipient and their community many times over,” added Nomusa. “It really is the gift that keeps on giving.”
Nomusa has started her training for the trek and is excited about the adventure ahead.
“I have a great group who have joined together to accompany me on my training walks (I try for at least one 10km + walk per week) and have even run (jogged) my first 5km course as part of my training.
“I have also participated in a breathing workshop to (hopefully) be able to replicate training at altitude, and I had a friend who is a personal trainer draw up a program for me.”
The Trek for Opportunity in October will take supporters on a hike through the Himalayas for a cause
Each participant in the Trek for Opportunity is fundraising for the cause, and Nomusa is hosting a barefoot bowling event to raise money.
“On the fundraising front, my donation page is live, and I am inviting everyone to join me for an afternoon of fun, camaraderie and a little twist on the traditional lawn bowls for the Manly Rock 'n' Bowl Barefoot Bowling Fundraiser. Sunday 8 October from 2pm. This event is about coming together, building connections and making a difference.”
If you would like to attend, tickets are $60 and will help Nomusa reach her fundraising target of $5,000 for Opportunity. Purchase your tickets to Rock n Bowl for Opportunity here.
