Australian churches celebrate Very Different Mother’s Day
On Mother’s Day this year, six churches in Western Australia and one in Queensland raised money for Opportunity International Australia through their church community in celebration of mothers around the world.
A Very Different Mother’s Day is a coming-together to honour mothers in their community, while raising much-needed funds to support mothers in Asia on their journey out of poverty. Funds raised during the Mother's Day celebrations was enough to help close to 70 women access smalll loans as well as health care, education and women's safety programs.

At the Everyday Church in Padbury, WA, the community heard inspiring stories of women like Bhikiben, who received a small loan from Opportunity’s local microfinance partner in India and started her own farming business.
“We loved hearing about the positive impact Opportunity International Australia makes overseas and how we have an opportunity to help make a difference,” said Melissa Hill, Senior Pastor at Everyday Church.
“Hearing the stories of the women that have been helped and giving our congregation, especially those who are not able to bless their mums for different reasons, this opportunity to bless and say thanks to a mum was a highlight.”
The funds raised on Mother’s Day across all the churches will provide small loans to nearly 70 women and families living in poverty. Melissa Hill expressed pride in being part of an initiative that makes a tangible difference in the lives of individuals and families, helping to uplift entire communities.

“We are all part of the solution, and we can each make a difference as we play our part. We can’t change the whole world, but we can change someone’s whole world,” added Melissa.
When asked why it is important to honour mothers, Melissa said:
“Firstly, the Bible says to honour our parents and as we do that, God promises that we will enjoy a long life. Secondly, simply because mothers give life to us, and give so much of themselves to us.
“Mothers play a significant role in families; they are nurturing and bring families together.
“It’s important to give mothers an opportunity because they deserve the very best!”
