Running a marathon for women in need

 

In April 2024, Opportunity International Australia Ambassador Shawna Hooton ran the Canberra Marathon in support of Opportunity, raising funds to support women living in poverty - a cause close to her heart.

On running the Canberra Marathon and raising enough money to help nine women grow their micro businesses with small loans, Shawna had this to say:

I did it!!! That was tough. Really tough. I absolutely loved the first half, running past old and new Parliament House, the National Gallery, beside the lake- alongside 10,000 other crazy runners and some awesome volunteers and fans. And then came 30km with knee pain, a drink station that had run out of electrolytes and my head phones running out of charge. That’s when I thought of you all counting on me to finish so we can send our funds to help other women.

I thought of the woman who might buy a buffalo to start her own curd making business, or the woman who might buy a sewing machine to start her own sari making business. And I dug deep, ran through the pain and cried with exhaustion when my friend gave me a big bear hug at the finish line. I’m just so grateful for all of you for supporting me to get through my one and only marathon! ????????????????"
