Social Impact Award for Opportunity’s partner Cashpor
The 2025 Microfinance Index results were recently published, and once again, show that Opportunity International Australia’s work with local partners is changing the lives of people living in poverty.
The study, conducted by independent organisation 60 Decibels, surveyed over 24,000 microfinance clients from 85 microfinance institutions (MFIs) in 39 countries. Of those surveyed, 1,300 people were clients of five of Opportunity’s MFI partners in India and Indonesia.
Opportunity’s partners performed above average compared to other MFIs, and a special Social Impact Award was given to our partner in India, Cashpor, who were one of the top three performing MFIs in Asia. Cashpor received the award for their fantastic outreach, client satisfaction and excellent outcomes for clients.

This is the fourth year that Opportunity has participated in the 60 Decibels study. It is an important impact study as we get real data from an independent, third party on client satisfaction, client protection and outcomes.
“The Microfinance Index is a chance for us to learn where we are performing well, and what about can be improved in the products and services our partners provide,” said Calum Scott, Opportunity’s Global Impact Director.
This year, additional questions were asked about disability and refugee status, as well as climate resilience and households’ preparedness for the impact of climate shocks.
Overall, 91 per cent of Opportunity clients reported improved quality of life since taking the loan, and 70 per cent said they spent less time worrying about their finances now.
Client Success Story: Lata from North-East India
One of Cashpor’s clients who has improved her family’s life is Lata, from a small village in North-East India. She is a mother of four, whose husband struggled to find employment.
Observing the increasing demand for disposable bowls and plates in her village, Lata saw an opportunity to start her own business. With her entrepreneurial spirit, she decided to manufacture and sell these products to local food vendors, catering services, and households, with the help of a small loan from Opportunity’s local partner Cashpor.
With her limited resources, Lata began her small-scale business in a small shed near her home. She researched and learned the techniques required to produce high-quality disposable bowls and plates. She sourced affordable raw materials, such as eco-friendly materials like biodegradable paper and plant-based fibres, to ensure her products were environmentally friendly.
Lata's business is growing from strength to strength
The quality and affordability of Lata's disposable bowls and plates soon gained recognition, and her business began to thrive. Word of mouth spread, and more people started ordering from her. Lata's dedication to providing excellent customer service, timely delivery, and a wide range of product options set her apart from the competition.
With the growing success of her business, Lata decided to invest in better equipment and machinery to increase production efficiency. This allowed her to meet the growing demand and expand her reach beyond the village to neighbouring towns and markets.
As Lata's business flourished, the family's financial situation improved. They were able to provide their children with better education and improved living conditions. Lata instilled the value of hard work, determination, and entrepreneurship in her children, encouraging them to pursue their own dreams and aspirations.
Lata's business of disposable bowls and plates not only generated income but also contributed to reducing plastic waste in their community. Her eco-friendly products became a symbol of sustainability and responsible consumption, inspiring others to make environmentally conscious choices.
Lata is a great example of a Cashpor client that has used a small loan to improve her and her family’s life.
