Kamong – following in his father’s footsteps

By Opportunity International Australia

As Opportunity International Australia celebrates 50 years, we look back at our Founder David Bussau’s vision – to help people lift themselves out of poverty and create a better future for their families.

The very first people David loaned $50 to in Blimbingsari, Indonesia, in 1976 were Ketut and his wife, Putu. They used the money to purchase a sewing machine to start a tailoring business, and the rest is history.

Ketut and Putu’s tailoring business grew in Blimbingsari, hiring staff and buying more sewing machines to keep up with demand.

Eventually, the success of that business allowed Ketut to explore other business opportunities.

The family moved to Denpasar, and Ketut started a furniture business, using timber to build cabinets, bookcases, dining tables and chairs.

When Ketut decided to retire, he closed the business. A short time later, Kamong decided to start it up again. Kamong is in his early 40s and is married with one daughter. His two sisters also live nearby in Denpasar, both married and enjoying their own careers, and Ketut and Putu split their time between their homes in Denpasar and Blimbingsari.

Last year, David Bussau visited Kamong at his workshop in Denpasar. Being a carpenter and a builder himself, David was interested in the details of the business.

“I’m impressed that he took the initiative and had the strength to start up again under his own steam,” said David. “I think that’s very admirable.”

Kamong had no carpentry or woodworking experience prior to taking over the business; he has a degree in computer engineering. But he has learned a lot about the craft of woodworking on the job.

“I asked my father for his support and to learn from his experience in running the business. He helped me a lot,” added Kamong. “He tells me a lot about working in this business, how to manage everything.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the business struggled, with no tourists and no exports of his furniture. But things picked up again, and now he is doing well.

“I’m in a golden time for this business at the moment,” said Kamong.

“We are so grateful to Pak David and the impact he had on our family,” added Kamong. “He is very inspiring and has helped a lot of people.”

For David, seeing the generational change that has happened in Ketut’s family was very rewarding.

“I’m sure his father is very proud of him,” said David. “He’s continued on with his entrepreneurial endeavours.”

When asked about his life now, Kamong said, “Thank God that my family is blessed. I’m happy with everything.”
