Reaping Innovation In Rural Areas

By Lucinda Needham

In developing countries, geographic isolation is often a barrier to accessing the tools people need to leave poverty behind. While digital technologies have greatly improved the way people access money and communicate with each other, another key to making a real difference in isolated, rural areas is through the continuous innovation of products and services, tailored to meet the specific needs of individuals and communities.

For example, in 2014, 17,504 farmers in the Philippines received tailored agricultural loans, helping them increase their incomes and provide for their families.

Other innovations, such as crop insurance, have provided farmers with greater financial security, particularly those susceptive to volatile weather patterns. Training on the proper use of fertiliser is another way we’ve sought to improve lives. In the Philippines, basic training saw ginger growers triple their yield over a year.

Supporting local farmers through innovation has other benefits too. It can increase food security and nutrition, protect the environment and natural resources and achieve sustainable development through which whole communities can benefit.

An alternative livelihood project run by one of Opportunity’s partners in the Philippines is having a significant impact on the lives participants who previously earned their incomes as scavengers on local waste dumps. On small plots of land donated by the city government, locals are taught how to grow and fertilise Naga Strawberries, a special variety from Hawaii that suits the country’s hot climate.

To date, the program has impacted over 60 families. Not only have they tripled their weekly earnings, they are learning specialised farming techniques, developing their skills and growing stronger as a community. Farmers are proud to wear their yellow uniform and say they are recognised by others in the community for their success. Most importantly, they can share their learnings, ideas and plan for a brighter future.

Your life-changing donations help fund more innovative programs just like this and help more families leave poverty behind. See how a small loan helped Menci in Indonesia start her own farm here.
