Alena's Story

Leave a lasting legacy - Alena's Story

In a simple stall constructed of palm branches, Alena Aomekore, a single mother of five daughters, is roasting and selling pisang gepeng – a popular banana treat in Indonesia. After the death of her husband seven years ago, Alena worried about how she would support her children, aged five to 18. Her relatives lived far away and her eldest daughter was disabled and needed special care. To provide for her family, Alena sold vegetables door-to-door, but struggled to earn enough money to put food on the table or pay for medicine.

A loan of Rp.750,000 (A$88) enabled Alena to buy ingredients to start her cooking business. As she worked, her income grew from just Rp.50,000 (A$5.90) to Rp.100,000 (A$12) a day. The business has enabled Alena to take care of her children and today, one of her daughters is in university!

By leaving a gift in your will to Opportunity International Australia, you can give a hand up out of poverty to mothers just like Alena, transforming their family’s future for generations to come.

Philippa and Andrew, Opportunity Supporters

We’ve spent many years working in partnership with Opportunity International Australia, seeing it grow from a small pioneer to a leader in microfinance. We love how it provides a real and sustainable way for poor entrepreneurs to work their way out of poverty. It’s important to us that the legacy we leave continues well after us. Our children have been part of our engagement and one aspect of our legacy is to provide them with an avenue to continue to engage in building up poor communities. We can think of no better, more enriching long-term gift to leave them.

Philippa and Andrew Tyndale, supporters of Opportunity

Gifts left in wills will be used for the general purposes of Opportunity International Australia, directed to the area of greatest need. This may be to expand Opportunity’s outreach, build the capacity of the organisations we partner with or as small loans.
